homewood community network expansion

When you hear the word “relay,” you might think of a relay race. Each person on a team starts running with a baton. After a set distance, that runner hands the baton to a teammate who carries it to the next person and so on until the first baton across the finish line wins. Each athlete has their own section to run but it’s the quickest team effort that wins the competition.

As an internet service provider using wireless technology, our team also uses relays. In our network, a relay is a stand-alone system that receives and rebroadcasts a signal to make it available to new areas. Just like the runners who carry the baton, our antennas catch the wireless signal and hand it off to the next antenna. Your internet connection is like the baton, full of data. Just as in the relay race, it’s critical to not drop the baton. Likewise, we take great care not to drop your signal.

Our latest relay was installed in Homewood this October to help us provide better signal into the community. If you’ve been to the neighborhood, you might have noticed that Homewood is mostly flat (save for the BIG hill in Homewood North) and is full of big, beautiful trees. This combination makes it difficult to cover certain areas, as the trees or other buildings may block the signal. The newest relay solves this problem for parts of the neighborhood from Hamilton to Hill Avenues and Cora to Wood Streets.

We are happy to serve the amazing people in the Homewood region and now we need your help to relay the message. We are looking for anyone who lives in Homewood or surrounding areas who needs access to high-speed internet that is free or low cost. We serve residents and businesses alike! Pick up the baton and help us bridge the digital divide in Pittsburgh.
